Yesterday, House Republicans renewed the terms of five UNC Board of Governors members, all while the University System seems to be crumbling before our eyes. If you're concerned about our beloved Universities, I hope you'll read these thoughts on what's going on and take some of the suggested actions. What's really happening? -This week BOG member (and Republican appointee) Steve Long made very public accusations that BOG Chair Harry Smith is directly behind the departure of Margaret Spellings and ECU President Cecil Stanton. He says nothing will change with the current board in place. I'll put a link to coverage of this in the comments. Reportedly, other members are planning to censure him for speaking out. -General Assembly leaders skipped the normal BOG member election process and used a procedural movement to keep the board largely intact - the major change in House appointments being that they kicked off a Democratic appointee (which also decreased the diversity of the board). -There are rumors swirling that House Speaker Tim Moore wants to replace Spellings or UNC's Carol Folt. I can't confirm those rumors, but I'm putting it out here because I think it's material to what happened yesterday. -Republicans seem to believe that the most important thing they can do is to reduce perceived liberal bias in the University System. Meanwhile, they seem to be quite content with underfunding the system, ruining its reputation, and thereby making it much harder for NC to do economic development. What can you do? -The House appointments have already passed, but you can always communicate with your legislators about any concerns and hopes you have for our Universities. There will be important things to advocate for in the upcoming budget negotiations. -There is a group of former UNC BOG members advocating for a return to form.
